Gear Review: Vibram FiveFingers KSO Shoe

Posted by Ace Of Clubs On February - 11 - 2010

On Wednesday, I purchased a pair of Vibram Five Fingers KSO shoes. My thought behind the purchase is, I train/fight barefoot, why am I training with a shoe outside of the ring/matt. This was compounded after a couple heavy treadmill interval workouts left my hips and knees sore. So I decided I would give it a try. I went to the local outdoor sporting goods store and tried a pair on.

Surprise number one, well sort of surprise. I have a short wide foot. Apparently my foot is to short for even the smallest men’s sizes. The customer service rep brought me out a women’s size 40. This was the correct length for my foot but he was concerned because of the width of my foot, it would not fit. It was a snug fit, but after about 5 minutes I was able to get the shoe on. The trick is to push your toes all the way in and focus on getting your pinky toe in first. Sliding it side to side seems to work best. After I finally got them on they were quite tight. But not for sure exactly how they were supposed to feel I walked around store in them. After walking around a bit jumping around and walking up and down an incline, I have to say they molded to my foot. I could obviously still feel them but they felt more like an extra layer of skin around my foot rather than a shoe.
I purchased the shoes and wore them out. I had to return back to work and did not want to spend 5-10 minutes taking them off so I wore them into the office. I was wearing a pair of longer kakis. No one noticed or said anything about the shoes. The ones I have are all black so visually they great at blending in unless someone is specifically looking at your feet.

I went to training, and they were quickly noticed by most people in the gym. My gym is a MMA gym so the members are more inclined to see the benefits to this type of shoe I think. The most common question of course the price.

Kettle bell and lunges were no problem with this shoe. It was like going barefoot except I had more grip than usual. After leaving the gym I went to my apartment’s gym and did an interval treadmill workout. I did notice less him pain after the workout, my knee still acted up slightly but it was noticeably less then with my Under Armor shoes. When I run in tennis shoes, I the balls of my feet, especially on a treadmill, get incredibly hot. The rubber will begin to melt in that spot. I felt no heat buildup in this shoe. I felt some stabilizing muscles working more than usual but this could be because of the previous workout. The only pain I felt was on the balls of my feet from the increase impact. With normal shoes you have a little but more padding on the balls of your feet. While it was not very painful, it was an added discomfort worth noting. I have no doubt that feeling will go away after a couple times using the shoe and my foot adjust to it.

So far in the short experience wearing this shoe, I love it. It is very freeing. I personally like going barefoot to begin with, and this shoe allows be to basically do that. I hope to get another pair or two in the next months. The KSO Trek for outdoor trail running and the sprint for my lounging/ring entrance shoe.

I’ll be sure to post an update in about a week or so on how the shoes are coming along and if they are helping or hurting my training.
